Awards and Recognition

GFASG & AAG First Annual Book Award
———————————————————
The New American Farmer won the Geographies of Food and Agriculture Specialty Group (GFASG) of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) first annual book award in April 2020. "We reviewed many impressive books nominated for the award that are a testament to the important scholarship being completed by the GFASG Membership. The Awards Committee (Alison Hope Alkon, Renata Blumberg, Madeleine Fairbairn, and Colleen Hammelman) found that Minkoff-Zern's book stood out for its contemporary relevance, geographical breadth (spanning multiple sites throughout the US) and research depth (demonstrating deep and ongoing engagement with farmers, government agencies, and NGOs). In a context of growing anti-immigrant sentiment in the US, this book makes visible the often-overlooked group of immigrant farmers that are building agroecological farms in pursuit of more ecologically-sustainable food systems. In doing so, it also has practical relevance for agencies seeking to eliminate discrimination against immigrant farmers. Minkoff-Zern's theorizing of what racial identity means as well as the structural and everyday discrimination faced by these farmers makes an important intervention into our understanding of the geographies of food and agriculture."
